According to reports, the incident stemmed from a rupture in a water main, leaving the Rafter Apartments residents completely without water. Businesses along Hennepin Avenue were forced to temporarily shut their doors, posting signs to alert would-be customers. Cydney Walker, arriving at work early Saturday, described a scene of flooding and icy conditions, stating that a fire hydrant was busted. The situation quickly became a safety hazard, with people slipping and falling on the ice formed by escaping water.
The City of Minneapolis responded swiftly, with crews working to isolate the damaged pipe and begin repairs. Adam Fetcher, a city spokesperson, explained that the repair process involved excavating large sections of the street. While the city aimed to restore water service late that night, the necessary street and sidewalk repairs were expected to continue into the following week. In a social media post, the City of Minneapolis confirmed the water shut-off on E Hennepin Avenue between 2nd and 4th streets.
Neil, one of the affected residents, described the inconvenience: "I just don’t have water in my kitchen or apartment, no water pressure in the shower and that’s about it." While seemingly minor, these disruptions can significantly impact daily life.
Fetcher acknowledged the disruption, stating, "We understand the significant disruption this break has created for residents and businesses in the affected neighborhood." He further emphasized the city's ongoing efforts to maintain the water infrastructure, investing in improvements based on asset management principles. "Most people only think about water infrastructure when something goes wrong, but City staff work every day to keep these systems working reliably," he said. He also pointed out that Minneapolis experiences water main failures at a rate below the average for a water system of its size.
