A bold vision for Sabah's future has been unveiled, promising transformative changes and addressing long-standing development gaps. The manifesto, presented by Barisan Nasional (BN), is a comprehensive roadmap to propel Sabah into a new era of prosperity and equality.
'A Home for Every Family'
One of the most ambitious pledges is the commitment to build 15,000 affordable homes annually under the Rumah SabahKu program. This initiative aims to make homeownership a reality for families across the B40 and M40 income brackets, ensuring that every Sabah family has a place to call their own. Additionally, a special repair fund will be established to assist households affected by natural disasters, a crucial measure in a region prone to such events.
But here's where it gets controversial: BN also proposes the creation of a Sabah wealth fund, a long-term investment vehicle funded by the state's natural resources and various stakeholders. For the oil and gas sector, the manifesto proposes mandatory quotas to increase local involvement. It suggests that 50% of skilled jobs should be held by Sabahans and that local companies should participate in 30% of all contracts, a move aimed at strengthening the local economy and creating high-value job opportunities.
The plan also targets entrepreneurship and the digital economy, offering grants to micro and small businesses, expanding digital connectivity statewide, and supporting creative industries, tourism, and agro-business initiatives. BN aims to empower women and youth through various programs, including ensuring 30% female representation in state decision-making and creating a dedicated ministry for women and family development.
Education initiatives under the manifesto are extensive, ranging from tuition-free higher education at state-owned institutions to incentives for students studying outside Sabah. Support for kindergarten fees and local law education at Universiti Malaysia Sabah are also proposed.
In terms of healthcare and social welfare, BN promises free treatment for critical illnesses, support for rural volunteers, anti-bullying initiatives, and the creation of a Sabah unity council to foster social cohesion.
