In a remarkable achievement that underscores his exceptional career, Patrick Kane has officially surpassed Mike Modano to become the all-time leading scorer among players born in the United States. This significant milestone occurred on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, where Kane, currently a forward for the Detroit Red Wings, registered his 1,375th point in the NHL.
The record-breaking moment came during the second period of a game against the Washington Capitals, specifically at the 9:52 mark. Kane assisted on a crucial goal scored by Ben Chiarot, who delivered a powerful one-timer from the point that equalized the game at 1-1. In this play, Kane skillfully maneuvered the puck toward the left corner before making a precise pass to Alex DeBrincat, who quickly spun around to set up Chiarot’s shot.
Prior to achieving this new record, Kane had tied Modano’s long-standing mark during a home game against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. During that matchup, he provided an assist on DeBrincat’s goal late in the third period, which marked a pivotal moment in the game despite the Red Wings ultimately losing 3-1.
At 37 years old and in the midst of his 19th season in the NHL, Kane has now eclipsed the previous record held by Modano since November 7, 2007, when Modano reached his 1,233rd point, surpassing Phil Housley. Over his illustrious career, Modano, who spent the majority of his time with the Minnesota North Stars and the Dallas Stars, concluded his NHL journey with a total of 1,374 points (comprising 561 goals and 813 assists) after finishing with the Red Wings in the 2010-11 season.
Reflecting on his journey, Kane mentioned, "I never really thought about any American scoring records or being a top American player of all time, right? You’re just playing." This humble perspective highlights his passion for the game over personal accolades.
Kane, affectionately known by the nickname 'Showtime,' accumulated 1,225 points (446 goals, 779 assists) during his tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks between 2007 and 2023. His impressive list of achievements includes winning the Stanley Cup three times (in 2010, 2013, and 2015) and earning various prestigious awards such as the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year in 2007-08, the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP in 2012-13, as well as the Art Ross Trophy for leading the league in scoring and the Hart Trophy for most valuable player in 2015-16.
Originally hailing from Buffalo, New York, Kane was the first overall selection by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2007 NHL Draft. In addition to his impactful seasons with the Blackhawks and Red Wings, he also played 19 games for the New York Rangers in the 2022-23 season.
Mike Modano expressed confidence in Kane’s legacy, stating, "I think he’ll be the most recognized [American player] for a long, long time. With the Stanley Cups, personal awards, and his longevity, he will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the best. He has achieved incredible numbers and been part of phenomenal playoff runs with the Blackhawks, showcasing remarkable talent throughout his career."
Before Kane’s ascent to the top, Phil Housley held the record for the most points scored by a U.S.-born player, reaching his 1,064th point on March 13, 1999, which enabled him to surpass Joe Mullen. Housley retired with a total of 1,232 points (338 goals, 894 assists) in the 2002-03 season.
Reflecting on Kane's accomplishments, Housley acknowledged the significance of this achievement, stating, "There have been many great players, believe me. But to witness what he has accomplished, especially considering the injuries he has overcome later in his career, is truly inspiring. He takes excellent care of himself and continues to train hard. Even at this stage, he remains a valuable asset for Detroit and can still compete at a high level. In my opinion, he undoubtedly ranks as the top player in American hockey history."
