For a price tag of $8,500, Nissan is offering a kei truck that seems to have taken a trip back to the 1990s. The compact light commercial vehicle (LCV) closely resembles the recently refreshed Suzuki Carry, with modifications mainly limited to its branding.
Nissan has recently given its Clipper Truck a subtle makeover, ensuring it remains competitive in Japan's highly regulated kei truck market. This update follows Suzuki's recent enhancements to their Carry and Super Carry models, which share a platform with Nissan's version.
Originally launched in 2003 as a rebadged Mitsubishi Minicab, the Clipper Truck underwent a significant change in 2013 when Nissan shifted its partnership to Suzuki, basing the second generation on the Suzuki Carry. Now, thirteen years later, this mid-cycle refresh represents the first notable update, focusing on aesthetic changes and new technology aimed at compliance with regulations.
In terms of design, the previous version featured a distinctive Nissan grille, but the latest Clipper Truck closely mirrors the Suzuki Carry's front fascia. The only distinguishing feature is the Nissan badge adorning its compact cab-over nose. For the 2026 model year, the vehicle has been equipped with sleeker LED headlights, a redesigned bumper intake, and updated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensors.
While the overall design remains largely unchanged from its predecessor, buyers will find a new color option available: Moss Gray.
However, it's important to note that the Nissan version does not offer the taller roof or extended-cab configurations found in the Suzuki Super Carry. In addition, it lacks any of the rugged variants available from Suzuki, such as the X Limited trim, focusing instead on being a straightforward workhorse.
Interior and Safety Enhancements
Upon entering the cabin, one might feel transported back to 1996 rather than experiencing the modernity expected in 2026. The interior features exposed metal and hard plastics, although there are some noteworthy upgrades. A new digital gauge cluster, integrated headrests, and a small item tray have been introduced. Additionally, a drink holder for passengers and a USB port are now included, while the center console offers an optional 8-inch infotainment display.
Of particular significance are the advancements in safety features. The Clipper Truck now includes lane departure warning, road sign recognition, an emergency stop signal, and pedal misapplication control. It also comes equipped with a front sensor that enhances its ability to perform intelligent emergency braking.
Not Powerhouse Performance
When it comes to power, the Clipper Truck remains unchanged. Under the hood lies a modest 658cc three-cylinder engine, which produces a mere 50 horsepower (37 kW / 50 PS) and 59 Nm (43.5 lb-ft) of torque. Customers can choose between a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic, with options for either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Sales of the 2026 Nissan Clipper Truck are set to begin in Japan on January 23, with prices starting at ¥1,344,200 (approximately $8,500 based on current exchange rates) and going up to ¥1,676,400 ($10,600) for higher-end trims. This pricing positions it above the base model of the Suzuki Carry, which starts at ¥1,172,600 ($7,500), despite both vehicles sharing nearly identical hardware.
