Uncover the secrets behind the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony with Marco Balich, the mastermind behind the event. Despite his lack of Olympic experience, Balich's enthusiasm and expectations are high as he prepares for the grand opening ceremony on Friday night. He describes the planning process as a thrilling journey, akin to being on a speeding train, with each day bringing unexpected twists and turns, like heads of state changing their minds at the last minute. But it's this very evolution that makes it fascinating.
As the creative director and executive producer, Balich is thrilled with the ceremony's progress, emphasizing its dynamic nature and global connection. Balich Wonder Studio, founded by Balich, Gianmaria Serra, and Simoner Merico in 2013, has become a prestigious live event creator and service provider, boasting an impressive portfolio. They've organized 16 Olympic ceremonies and 13 regional games, including the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup ceremony, and delivered exclusive events for top brands like Louis Vuitton, Ferrari, Dolce & Gabbana, UEFA, Maserati, Bulgari, and IWC. Balich's expertise is recognized with an Emmy award in 2006 and a Compasso d'Oro in 2017.
His artistic vision is showcased in the 2015 Milan Expo's iconic 'Tree of Life' and the revolutionary Superlive format, 'Giudizio Universale, the Sistine Chapel Immersive Show' in collaboration with the Vatican Museums. The Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, titled 'Armonia' (Harmony), pays tribute to Giorgio Armani and celebrates 'Made in Italy.' It features performances by Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Laura Pausini, Pierfrancesco Favino, Sabrina Impacciatore, Matilda De Angelis, Ghali, Cecilia Bartoli, and Lang Lang. Balich's choral show, with costumes by Massimo Cantini Parrini, and the traditional athlete parade at San Siro Stadium, promise a spectacular spectacle.
Fashion will play a significant role, with collaborations between individual designers rather than brands, adding a unique touch. Balich emphasizes the ceremony's message of harmony and peace, highlighting the unity of athletes from various countries, including Iran, the U.S., Venezuela, China, Japan, and North and South Korea. He believes it will offer a much-needed respite from daily horrors, showcasing the joy and spirit of the athletes. Additionally, Balich's personal life is a highlight, as he is set to marry Gucci's CEO, Francesca Bellettini, in December, adding a touch of magic to the event.
