A lesser-known respiratory virus is on the rise in Northern California, affecting cities like Sacramento and Davis. The virus, known as human metapneumovirus (HMPV), has been detected through wastewater data, indicating its presence in multiple regions, including San Francisco, Marin, Vallejo, Napa, Novato, and Santa Rosa. Despite its widespread impact, the virus is not new; it was first identified in humans in 2001, but scientists believe it has been circulating for at least 50 years. HMPV is a member of the same viral family as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
While HMPV is common, with most people experiencing an infection by age 5, it can cause significant health issues, especially in vulnerable populations. Symptoms are similar to the flu or common cold, including fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and headache. Less frequently, it may lead to voice changes, eye or ear infections, and rashes. Typically, symptoms resolve within two to five days, but if they persist for over two weeks, medical attention is advised.
The virus spreads primarily through contact with infected individuals, contaminated surfaces, and droplets from coughs or sneezes. It's challenging to distinguish HMPV from other respiratory illnesses due to their overlapping symptoms. Treatment focuses on symptom management, including rest and hydration, as there are no specific antiviral therapies. Prevention measures include regular handwashing, avoiding touching the face, cleaning surfaces, and staying away from infected individuals. Despite its prevalence, HMPV is often overlooked due to its mild symptoms in most cases, but it can lead to severe complications in certain populations.
