Canada's Olympic goaltending is facing skepticism, but the goalies are ready to silence the doubters and chase gold!
As the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 approach, a shadow of doubt has been cast over Team Canada's goaltending. Head coach Jon Cooper, clearly eager to address this lingering skepticism, spoke at length after practice on Monday. When asked about the public's perception of his goaltenders – Jordan Binnington, Darcy Kuemper, and Logan Thompson – Cooper acknowledged that it's natural for comparisons to be made to legendary Canadian goalies like Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, and Carey Price. These are names synonymous with a golden era of Canadian goaltending, with Brodeur, Luongo, and Price all having led Canada to Olympic gold medals in past tournaments.
But here's where it gets interesting: Cooper vehemently defended his current goaltending trio. He stated that while they might not all be destined for the Hall of Fame like some of their predecessors, they possess something equally valuable: championship pedigree. He pointed to their Stanley Cup victories and their proven ability to make crucial saves when it matters most. Cooper specifically recalled witnessing Darcy Kuemper's heroics in Tampa and seeing Jordan Binnington and Logan Thompson perform over the past couple of years. He expressed complete faith in their abilities, emphasizing that the team rallies behind them, and they, in turn, do the same for their teammates. Cooper feels the narrative of goaltending being Canada's weakest link is unfounded and doesn't understand its origin.
This sentiment is echoed by the goalies themselves. Logan Thompson shared, "Everyone always just says how they think the goaltending is the weakest part (of Team Canada). I mean, it's been the word for the last couple of years. I don't see it that way. I don't think we see it that way. But for some reason everyone else does." Darcy Kuemper added that while the comparison to Hall of Famers is understandable, he and his fellow goalies are "really confident with the three of us, our union." They are eager to showcase their capabilities and are looking forward to the competition.
Their confidence is well-placed. All three have hoisted the Stanley Cup: Binnington with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, Kuemper with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, and Thompson as a backup with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. In fact, Binnington was instrumental in Canada's victory at the 4 Nations Face-Off last year, a tournament where Canadian goaltending was also under scrutiny. His performance in the final, with 31 saves and a crucial overtime performance, was hailed as one of Canada's finest in a best-on-best event.
Binnington sees this doubt as fuel: "I think that's what keeps me going in some aspects, is proving myself and seeing what I'm capable of and seeing where I can take it. That's something I've used as motivation. That's just part of sports, is people are going to doubt you, and it's how you handle it." However, it's worth noting that Binnington's current NHL season with the Blues has been challenging, with statistics that place him among the lower-ranked Canadian goalies. Yet, he remains unfazed, believing the Olympic environment is entirely different and that he can compartmentalize his NHL struggles.
While Thompson and Kuemper have stronger NHL numbers this season, they weren't part of the 4 Nations tournament. With Binnington's past success in high-pressure situations for Canada, it's likely he'll get the nod to start when Canada faces Czechia. Binnington emphasized the team's unity: "There's always something to talk about out there. I think for us it's just sticking together and whoever's in there is just supporting and pushing each other." Thompson perfectly summarized their collective mindset: "Excited to go out there and prove everyone wrong."
