The Boston Red Sox are facing a delightful, yet challenging, problem: too many talented outfielders! With rising stars like Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, and Masataka Yoshida all vying for playing time, manager Alex Cora has a tough decision to make. But here's where it gets interesting... how will he manage this outfield logjam?
The current plan seems to be keeping all five players, which means some will inevitably spend time on the bench. Jarren Duran has proven his worth over the past two seasons, and Roman Anthony is expected to play every day. Yoshida and Abreu could see some time as designated hitters, but that position also needs to be available for Triston Casas and Willson Contreras.
Now, here's a potential solution that's been swiftly rejected: moving Ceddanne Rafaela to the infield. But hold on, because Red Sox manager Alex Cora is firmly against this idea. Why? Because past experiments haven't gone well. Rafaela is a stellar defensive outfielder, even winning a Gold Glove in 2025. Plus, his offensive stats are significantly better in the outfield (.256/.301/.412) compared to the infield (.192/.219/.295). The numbers speak for themselves.
The Red Sox will still need to address the second and third base positions. This might become less of an issue if they re-sign Alex Bregman to play alongside Trevor Story, Marcelo Mayer, and Contreras/Casas.
