The ROIDCheck project, led by the University of Queensland, has exposed a critical issue: the majority of these substances are far from what they claim to be.
In a year-long study, 212 samples of illegal steroids were analyzed, and the results were shocking. Only 10% of the samples matched their labels, with a staggering 90% containing unexpected, incorrect, or dangerous substances. This includes the presence of trenbolone enanthate, a livestock steroid banned in Australia and highly toxic to humans. The study also revealed that 15.2% of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) were mislabelled, further emphasizing the lack of quality control in the unregulated market.
Dr. Timothy Piatkowski, the lead researcher, highlights the serious health risks associated with these drugs. IPEDs, designed to alter physical appearance, strength, and sporting performance, can lead to a range of cardiovascular, metabolic, endocrine, neurological, psychiatric, and liver diseases. The study's findings indicate that even individuals who have used drug checking services may not be fully aware of the risks.

However, the Queensland Government's recent ban on drug checking has presented a challenge. While ROIDCheck can still provide group-level data, individual results are no longer accessible to consumers. The next steps involve expanding the program nationally and including checks for other illicit performance-enhancing drugs, such as injectable peptides, which are also gaining popularity in Australia for anti-aging, injury recovery, and tanning purposes.
